Get involved in the fight to stop plastic pollution!
I am excited to announce that I am a finalist for National Geographic’s 2023 Slingshot Challenge, an environmental award for youth finding solutions to our global climate problems! My submission was about a program I started at my school with our Environmental Action Club, called Dishes on Demand: we provide reusable plates and utensils for team dinners to curb plastic pollution. You can watch the news story here, and see the other entries here!
You can learn more about Dishes on Demand through the Environmental Action Club's website!
In 2021 as an eighth grader, I won second place in the National History Day competition, with my research on the Keep America Beautiful campaign and its surprisingly negative influence on the environmental movement. My video, A Climate Carol, reveals false industry promises, and my process paper describes my research in detail. I performed at the state and national level during the COVID-19 pandemic, and was the only Maine student to win national acclaim in any category in 2021.
In this interview with John Taylor of the Margaret Chase Smith Policy center, which hosts the competition here in Maine, as well as with my advisor, Charlotte Agell, I explain how it all came together. My work is also featured in this article.
I am currently working on a project to show the sheer immensity of plastic pollution, based on Wealth, Shown to Scale by Matt Korostoff. It is not finished yet, but when it is, I will post it here.
My passion for learning about climate change and plastic pollution was finally realized when I was given an assignment in 7th grade: Pick a topic, research it, dive in and have some end result that demonstrates what you learned. I choose plastic!
My presentation shows you my journey and experiences while learning, and teaches the basics of plastic pollution and how you can start get involved.

In 2020, I volunteered with Beyond Plastics to teach young kids about plastic pollution and lead them in taking action.
This was my first opportunity to connect with a wider audience and teach them what I have learned!
As a member of Yarmouth High School, I now lead my high school's Environmental Action Club. To learn more about my school's club and our projects, visit this website.
In the fall of 2021, I presented this impactful, easy-to-digest slideshow for a group of adult students at Nature Links.
Nature Links is "a Blue Hill-based nonprofit offering continuing education opportunities for adults with disabilities" that "seek(s) to empower ... participants to be active community members and responsible citizens through a curriculum grounded in social connection, ecological awareness, and practical life skills". I encourage you to use my slideshow however you wish as long as you give credit to me, and share it with your family and friends!
As part of my freshman year climate change project, I studied Fast Fashion: the enemy of sustainability!
