Advisories

Overview- what is an advisory

Advisories are important at our school because Advisory is a place for students to come together and work as a team because we are all working towards the same goal. This class will target real world problems and we will discuss how we can make a change and learn from our histories or current mistakes. So not only will we be talking about current issues, we will be doing this as a community. As a community we will help change the world together and build a group of leaders for the world. In this class we will also spend much time focusing on what the students need, if they need help in a certain class or are just falling behind, and are feeling stressed. This is their safe place. We will stay on top of them and check in to see how everything is with classes and just with their mental health. We will work on being responsible and the importance of being independent at times while still maintaining that support going. The main focus of this class is getting students to improve in classes by getting some more time to focus on what it is you need help on, as well as more one on one time with teachers if needed. We will spend half of class talking about current issues/ making a change and the other half focusing on what we can improve and get done in other classes.

At our school we believe that Advisories helps students to build relationships. Building relationships is very crucial and healthy for students and just everyone in general, not only does it give students something to look forward to (seeing their friends). It gives a healthy mindset. If students don't feel the support by their peers and teachers they're gonna stop trying because it feels like no one cares. That no one is there for them. In advisories we want to make sure everyone feels important, we want to support everyone. We are here for all of our students.

“How schools can make advisories meaningful for students and teachers” written by Evie Blad. Advisories are important because it helps build strong relationships. In the article it states “Researchers say students' learning can be stifled if they feel like they don't belong at school or if environments don't seem designed for them. And data support the idea that many students feel isolated or disengaged at school.” It also states “Every kid needs adults and people to build relationships with them," she said. "I'm not just a math teacher. I'm here to help these kids be successful."

As you can tell building relationships is extremely crucial especially in advisories cause that's what it's about. Without them students feel discouraged and won't succeed because they feel isolated and like they have no to turn to. We make it our top priority to make advisories inclusive, welcoming, and above all a safe environment for students to express themselves and be themselves.

What does advisory look like at Moo Moo high?

My School:At Moo Moo high, we believe advisories should work for the students' needs. We don't want our students' voices to ever be undermined. We want everyone to be heard and want to know what we can do to make this learning experience the best for them. We want to make sure all students take something away from the work we will be completing in class. Advisories are all about teamwork and including everyone so it's important that we hear from our actual teams thoughts and or concerns. We want students to branch out and have the freedom to shape themselves along the way as well as their futures. We will support them and help lead their experiences.

Here at Moo Moo high, one can see Advisories in action when you look at our main curriculum and what the class will be focusing on each week. We as teachers think it's important to learn about human rights, it has nothing to do with politics it's simply human rights. This is important to learn and be educated about. Our students agree especially with everything that's been going on the past few months. We can't tell what our future has in hold for us, but we definitely have total control and our impacts in the world. As students grow, we want them to grow with the right mindset and not a brainwashed system we see a lot today. Students want to make that change and be that change, we as teachers will teach them how they can use their voice to empower and to stand for what they believe in. This is what brings everyone together and is what makes advisories so important. On top of that we understand students have work from other classes. We know it can be stressful and confusing so we have let them have time to work on anything it is they need, all mesh teachers from their cluster will be there to guide them. While doing this we can work in small groups or one on one. We also understand that because of this work and because of the stress that comes along with it, students get overwhelmed. So as requested, we have a counselor with us every class for students to talk to if needed. This class will not at all be graded, because this class is a safe space. Students shouldn't have to worry about grading.

According to article “ How schools can make advisories meaningful for students and teachers”, Advisories are important because it gives students the freedom to shape out their experiences. In the article it states “Done well, advisories are designed around the needs of students, giving them the freedom to shape their experiences and the space to express their fears, hopes, and needs, she said, and that kind of model takes planning and resources.” As you can tell, letting the students decide is important because at the end of the day it's their future. We are the teachers teaching them, we want to teach them things that matter to them as well as to us.

Connection to our mission statement

At our school, we believe advisories are extremely crucial. This is a students safe space and we are open to helping them and supporting them at all times. In our mission statement it states “We are open to all races, genders, sexualties, and ethnicities. We expect that our students work hard and try to experience new things and adventures. We want to inspire young activists to stand up for what they believe in because we think it’s important for everyone to have a voice in our school and in life. ”, therefore everyone will feel included and safe at our school. No one will feel isolated or different, judgment will not be tolerated. Our students will not have to live up to anyone's expectations but their own. We believe in them and know they will make the right choices. This is their school where they can be who they are, we are here to show them that. We will have black lives matter flags and LGBTQ+ flags in every classroom and outside the school. This school, this advisory especially is acceptance and safety. Were all a team no matter what.
