Math Connections is the second math class for sixth grade students. It is designed to provide real world learning opportunities related to math. In addition, students have the opportunity to work through tasks and projects with groups that make real connections to math and provide hands on learning and collaboration opportunities. Most units in math connections are designed as review of content previously learned with one exception. Unit 6 will follow an Amplify Unit on Data that will still provide real world learning opportunities.
Units 1 & 2: Estimation, Fact Fluency, & Whole Number Operations
Unit 3: 2D Geometry
Unit 4: Percents & Circle Graphs
Unit 5: 3D Geometry
Unit 6: Describing Data (Amplify Unit)
Unit 7: Cumulative Review (Fraction, Decimal Focus)
Unit 8: Probability
Unit 6: Amplify Caregiver Support Resource
IXL:
IXL is a learning platform that lets students practice skills that they’re learning and guides them to material that will help them grow the most. With thousands of skills that match what we’re covering in class, as well as insights into student progress, IXL is a great resource to help your child excel. Have your child sign in through their school issued device using CLEVER.
Students complete the initial diagnostic assessment to determine areas unique to each child that require additional focus. Students will complete diagnostic check-ins at the end of term 2 and again at the end of the year to monitor overall growth.
In Math Connections, students will "jump into the arena" once a cycle in class to update their overall levels. Each week, students will be expected to do some work outside of class to improve their skills as well.
Expectations:
2 skills completed with a minimum score of 80 (proficient). OR
Skills worked on for a minimum of 30 minutes at home (if a student struggles to meet proficiency within the 30 minute timeframe, it would be helpful to check in with the teacher to learn about opportunities for additional support).
XtraMath:
This year we are using an online program called XtraMath to develop our students’ math fact fluency. A strong math fact foundation will help your child succeed when learning more advanced math like fractions or algebra. While they will be using this program during school hours, you can also use this as extra practice at home. Have your child sign in through their school issued device using CLEVER.
