Medication On Overnight Field Trips

According to Board of Education policy:

Self-administration of any medication may be considered with an appropriate plan in place for extraordinary situations such as long distance overnight field trips. Self-Administration of controlled drugs is never permitted during school or extra-curricular activities. Special provision shall be made for those children on a field trip who require or may require medication. When parents do not accompany their children on the field trip, medication shall be administered in one of the following ways: 

1. The children themselves, if authorized in writing and approved in advance by their Physician, parent and school nurse. 

2. By school staff who have legal authority to administer medication. 

Those who have legal authority to administer medication are the following: 

1. For students whose medication is prescribed to be administered in a regular pattern and the administration of which requires no judgement as to whether the medication is needed, any employee of the Board of Education has legal authority to administer medication. 

2. For students whose medication is prescribed to be administered only when a judgement is made that the medication is needed, those who have legal authority are the following: a) A licensed medical doctor b) A licensed registered nurse. 

In order for students to be able to take medication on the trip, doctor's orders are required. The form below (Form 13A) is the necessary form. 

Each individual medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter medication, REQUIRES A SEPARATE FORM (Form 13A) signed by a licensed medical doctor, a parent signature, and our school nurse.

Reminders: 

• You will need a separate form for each medication, signed by a doctor, the parent and the school nurse. 

• All over-the-counter medications must be in its original bottle/packaging. 

• Prescription medications need to be only the amount that you will need for the trip.

• All medications and forms must be turned into our school nurse at least 2 weeks prior to the trip, March 24, 2027
