Welcome Back!
I hope that everyone was able to enjoy summer with their family and that you are feeling excited to start a new year, even if somewhat nervous. Being nervous is completely normal for 6th graders, but it is my #1 priority to help you transition smoothly into WIS. I want you to feel safe, comfortable, happy, and excited to come to school.
Nonetheless, sixth grade is a big year; new school, new friends, new routine, and many other firsts during the initial year at WIS. I hope that this journey creates wonderful memories for all, but please know that I am here to help at any time. Both parents and students are welcome to contact me with questions and concerns whenever they may arise.

As we embark on our first month of school, you can expect the following:
A launch of our Reader's and Writer's Workshop! This will include:
Learning about ourselves as readers; looking at our own reading history and planning for our reading future. We will begin to develop our reading identity, or continue to dig deeper into reading identities we have already established.
Diving into our classroom library as well as the WIS library!
Familiarizing ourselves with the routine of a workshop lesson.
Building the foundation for strong reading and writing habits.
Looking ahead to our first reading unit (which will begin in September and continue into October):
Our first reading unit in ELA 6 - A Deep Study of Character - We will be:
analyzing characters in fiction.
looking closely at character traits; both the likable and unlikable.
determining what influences a character's words, thoughts, and actions.
identifying the conflicts a character faces and how they affect the development of the story.
studying a character to determine what he or she may teach the reader about the theme.
reflecting on what we've learned and setting goals for the future.
