Sandplay therapy is a hands-on, non-verbal therapeutic process based on the depth psychology of C. G. Jung and Dora Kalff. It provides an opportunity for aspects of the unconscious to be experienced and expressed symbolically by playfully placing small images into a tray of sand. This allows both patient and therapist an opportunity to observe the development of a symbolic process and integrate symbolic material into the therapeutic field. It is a powerful and healing process for dealing with issues of trauma, grief & loss, depression, anxiety, and change of life transitions. I also incorporate image work using other art modalities, use of meditation, and guided imagery. Don't let the name fool you, Sandplay Therapy is not the same as "play therapy" and is not just for kids! Sandplay is well suited for adults as well as children and allows both to access unconscious material symbolically in the sand. Each tray is a symbolic representation of your internal world made external. Sandplay is a powerful tool for treating trauma and other presenting problems that exist in the pre-verbal areas of the nervous system.

Mindfulness-based therapies blend mindfulness practices with cognitive and behavioral strategies to enhance mental health. These approaches, including Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), emphasize mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion toward one's thoughts and feelings. By teaching individuals to engage with the present moment nonjudgmentally, these therapies aim to improve emotional resilience and psychological flexibility. Effective in treating a range of issues like depression, anxiety, and stress, third-wave therapies help develop a healthier relationship with internal experiences, leading to improved overall well-being. We also offer training in formal mindfulness practices outside of the therapy context for performance improvement for executives, athletes, and a wide variety of other performance-based functions.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.
Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.
EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.
Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes.
We offer personalized medicine for children, adults, and adolescents for low to moderate-level acuity psychiatric and primary care needs. This is a self-pay service and the fee schedule is set by our physician based on level of complexity. At your request, we also collaborate with your medical care team to ensure that all aspects of your care are being tended to during the therapy process. We routinely review lab work to ensure that there is not a general medical condition, vitamin deficiency, or hormonal imbalance that could be contributing to your mental health condition.
"When I grow up I want to be symptom-free!" Said no child ever. . . None of us started out wanting a life where "not being sick" was the end goal. However, sometimes if we have been suffering for long enough that seems like all we can ever hope for. At Waking Valley, we categorically reject that notion and believe that having a great life should be the outcome of a psychotherapy process. Our wellness services focus on helping you go from 'good' to 'great'! Some of the ways we help you do that are:
Lifestyle Coaching
Nutritional Coaching
Exercise Coaching
Executive/Career Coaching
Mindfulness Coaching
Skills training and acquisition
*Note: coaching services are not covered by insurance and are on a self-pay basis only. Some classes offered may be covered by insurance under Group Therapy depending on your coverage and your diagnosis.
We are an entheogen-friendly clinic and embrace that many people utilize plant medicines to help achieve mystical and spiritual experiences as well as for relief of day-to-day stress and suffering. Whether you need help integrating your recent psychedelic experience, are planning on engaging in a journey for healing, or just want to sit across from a clinician who does not immediately categorize your use of plant medicines as "drug abuse," we are here to support you.
