Heather Hills, current Vice President of the Upper Canada Chapter, was one of the recipients of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation International Chapter Scholarship, valued at $3,000, alongside fellow member Meera Bissonauth.
Awarded through Women in Aviation International as part of a $250,000 grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, this scholarship supports WAI chapter members outside the United States in pursuing additional flight certificates. The 2021 spring scholarship program expanded WAI’s long-standing commitment to advancing women in aviation, contributing to more than $731,800 in scholarships awarded that year and over $14 million since 1995.
Heather used her scholarship toward advanced training at Upright Aviation Academy in Burlington, Ontario. Upright Aviation Academy offers specialized flight training with a strong focus on Upset Prevention and Recovery Training, aerobatics, and tailwheel flying for licensed pilots, using aircraft such as the Extra 300L. This training further strengthened Heather’s flying skills and her commitment to safety and continuous professional development.
The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, established in 1944, is one of the world’s largest philanthropic organizations and works globally to reduce human suffering and expand opportunity, while honoring a legacy that includes a strong appreciation for aviation.
Winning the WAI Private Pilot Scholarship was a meaningful moment in my aviation journey. I found out I had received the scholarship just before starting flight school, and being able to begin my training with such a significant credit already in place made an incredible difference. It immediately lifted a financial weight and allowed me to focus fully on learning, flying, and building confidence.
