He Kaakano Foundation Class 2023
Mauri ora e te whaanau,
The Reo Rua / Ruumaki Foundation Class has been established for 2023 for the purpose of transitioning the students who are currently in the Bilingual Unit at Manukorihi as well as cater for students who wish to extend their reo Maaori.
This Class will also be for those Year 9 & 10 students who have come to Waitara High School from a local Wharekura, such as Te Pihipihnga Kaakano Mai i Rangiaatea and or Ngaati Ruanui or from outside of the Taranaki district.
The He Kaakano Foundation Class will be run under the umbrella of the Year 9 Foundation Scheme. Which means we will follow the NZ Curriculum and will teach the following core subjects in a theme or project based approach;
English (Literacy)
Mathematics (Numeracy)
Social Studies
Health and Physical Education
Science
and be guided by the five competencies;
Thinking
Using language, symbols and texts
Managing self
Relating to others
Participating and contributing
He Kaakano Foundation will be instructed in Te Reo Maaori with the terminologies taught in English.
The uniqueness of the He Kaakano Foundation class is that we will encompass Te Ao Haka, Te Ao o te Paepae, Whaanau Hui once a term and depending on the level of Te Reo Maaori, NCEA will be introduced.
The Class will be led and taught by Whaea Terri Totorewa.
Across a fortnight the ‘He Kaakano Foundation’ students are allocated,
20 x 80 minute lessons of He Kaakano Foundation with me*
10x 80 minute lessons of “Options”
4x 60 minute lessons of “Coaching” also with me
4x 60 minute lessons of “Clubs”
*Additional specialist teachers are also used for Science, Maths and Health/Physical Education.
