Native prairies are home to a wide variety of both plants (flora) and animals (fauna). In order to build a healthy prairie ecosystem it is important to maintain a high level of biodiversity in our habitat. Biodiversity is a measure of how much variety exists among the living organisms in an ecosystem; this can be measured within a single species
(by measuring genetic differences), or between species
(by counting the number of different species that exist in an area).
At the Spartan Prairie, we work to not only add to the total number of native plant species, we are also conscious of the importance of genetic diversity within a species. With greater biodiversity among our plant species (native flora), we will see an increase in the biodiversity in the animal species (native fauna) as well!
