Spartan Prairie

Before the 1800's, prairies covered approximately 70% of Illinois land area. Now, less than 1% of the native prairie habitat is still around. Many conservation projects have been undertaken in Illinois to conserve, restore, or reconstruct native habitat. The vision of the Spartan Prairie is to create a space on campus in which students and the community can learn about, and enjoy native prairie habitat, so that love and support for native habitats may grow. To bring this vision to fruition, the project has two main goals: 1) to establish high quality prairie habitat and 2) to provide wide ranging educational and volunteer opportunities for members of our school and community.
The prairie is located just West of the Romeoville High School baseball field on the Northeast corner of Dartmoor Ave and Troxel Ave, and takes up about 69,000 sq ft. Preparation of the land and initial planting began in July 2017. As with any restoration project, it will take some time to see the results; however, with a little patience and some hard work, we have already begun to see the fruits (more accurately, flowers) of our labor!
