Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting schools and districts in their efforts to close the opportunity gap. By creating student-centered classrooms, the AVID programs aims to develop the strategies and skills to access rigorous academic content for students.  AVID is an elective course that focuses on improving habits, leadership, and culture. 

Valley Oak Middle School supports two AVID Elective courses (two 7th grade and two 8th grade courses). Students in the AVID Elective build community while developing skills such as organizing materials, taking focused notes, and participating in inquiry-based tutorials in order to support their success in other coursework. Additionally, AVID Elective students engage in college and career exploration by examining different career options, interviewing community speakers and visiting colleges.
