Criteria
The soils at the site must be permeable.
The site must have a proper slope for gravity flow and avoid runoff troughs and areas prone to flooding.
The system must be setback from wells, streams, and lakes.
The entire system must fit within the half-acre building area.
The system components must be durable and resistant to corrosion, degradation, and clogging.
The entire system implementation must be affordable for homeowners, preferably under $5,000.
The design must last a minimum of 5 years.
System must be designed for an influent waste flow of 300 gal/week.

The systems should have a minimum wetland slope of 0.075% to facilitate draining.
The plants should be insect-free, diverse, healthy, and spaced no greater than 66 inches apart from each other.
