The design and planning process took approximately 3 years from 1884 to 1887 to be completed and finalized.
Despite official construction starting on January 26th, 1887, all the tower's metal elements were created beforehand. A kit of 18,000 metal pieces were given to a team of workers to install. A team of 40 engineers and draftsmen created roughly 3,600 detailed drawings for the iron fabrication. These pieces were created with a painstakingly high amount of precision so they would fit together with ease. Many of the pieces were pre-assembled in the factory and had an accuracy of a tenth of a millimeter. Many methods were used to maximize efficiency such as "sandboxes" to align the four first-floor girders, and air-compressed caissons to work below water level on the Seine side to create foundations.
The foundational work took 5 months from January 26th, 1887 to July 1st, 1887 with up to 300 workers working through harsh conditions to accomplish this feat.
The upper part of the tower took considerably more time than the foundations due to the intricate nature of the tower which only increased and became more dangerous the taller it got. The metal pieces were lifted via steam-powered cranes with teams of 4 men placing each metal piece together.
The first floor and second floors of the tower were finished April 1st, 1888 and August 14th 1888 respectively. The tower was completed and ready for the opening of the Paris World Fair on March 31st, 1889. Gustave and his team were able to complete construction in a record time of 2 years 2 months and 5 days and keep it within budget.
