The People Behind it All
The Eiffel Tower would not be standing today without the considerable efforts of key leaders throughout the design and construction process.
The project team for the Eiffel Tower.
Gustave was the Project Engineer. He was also the co-founder of Eiffel et Cie, a metal structural design and construction. He oversaw the design and construction, ensuring the tower met the aesthetic and structural requirements of their contract. He also ensured that the project remained on schedule and within budget. As the head of the head of the project, he was also the public figure associated with this project, meaning he was the recipient of the majority of the pushback and praise. Gustave's insight and leadership played a key role in the completion of the Eiffel Tower (Architecture Courses 2008).
Maurice Koechlin
Émile Nouguier
Maurice and Émile were Senior Engineers at Eiffel et Cie. They were responsible for the initial design of the Eiffel Tower and also addressed structural issues during the design and construction process. More specifically, they developed the iconic lattice girders with horizontal belts and curved piers. Their work ensured the safety, functionality, and stability of the Eiffel Tower (Architecture Sources 2008; Sociéte d'Exploitation de la tour Eiffel 2022).
Stephen was the Architect. He was responsible for refining the design. This included adding decorative elements to enhance the visual appeal of the Eiffel Tower. More specifically, he was responsible for the decorative arches at the base, a glass pavilion on the first level, and the cupola at the top of the tower. His work ensured that the Eiffel Tower was not only an engineered structure but and artistic landmark for the city of Paris (Architecture Courses 2008).
