Our project involves a site in Norfolk, VA, located near an ODU building, Rogers Hall. Our design involves the shoreline, parking lot, and boardwalk shown on the map. The shoreline borders Colley Bay, a tributary of the Lafayette River.
The goal of this project is to solve three main coastal resilience-related issues near the Rogers Hall shoreline on the Old Dominion University (ODU) campus:
1.) The retaining wall at the main outfall into Colley Bay is failing and needs replacement to prevent the shoreline from continuing to erode.
2.) The ODU parking lot regularly floods, making an area of the parking lot unusable.
3.) The boardwalk is old, not equipped to handle expected sea-level rise, and casts shade on the shore that prevents wetland plants from growing due to insufficient light conditions.
