Volunteers are the heart of Virginia 4‑H. This section provides everything you need to understand your role, complete required screenings and trainings, and stay informed about youth protection standards.

Level 1 – Activity/Episodic Volunteers
Level 1 – Activity/Episodic Volunteers
Short‑term or occasional volunteers
No background check required
Includes: newly hired VCE employees, VCE interns, and 4‑H international host families
Level 2 – Returning Non‑Camp Volunteers
Level 2 – Returning Non‑Camp Volunteers
Standard volunteer category
Background check every 3 years
Applies to most club leaders, coaches, and program volunteers
Level 3 – Camp Volunteers
Level 3 – Camp Volunteers
Volunteers attending an overnight 4‑H camp at a 4‑H center
Annual background check required (ACA Accreditation requirement)
Level 4 – New Volunteers
Level 4 – New Volunteers
First‑time volunteers
One‑year background check, then transition to Level 2 (3‑year cycle)
