Problem Statement

Lipid Omega-3 extraction from Schizochytrium microalgae is an expensive process that discards most of the algal biomass in a waste stream, sending valuable biological products to water treatment plants. To improve the cost efficiency of DSM's current process, our team will identify high-value proteins and design an upstream process to recover protein products prior to oil extraction, leaving the existing downstream process and lipid yield unchanged.
