Final SuperPro Designer Process Flow Diagram
Process Description
The designed protein recovery system begins after S. limacinum growth, but prior to cell lysis. The first procedure is a pulsed electric field chamber that breaks open the microalgal cell without the hydrolysis of proteins that occurs in enzymatic methods. Centrifugation is then used to remove lipid portion by density, and other cellular particulates are filtered through sequential ultrafiltration and diafiltration. The next step utilizes isoelectric precipitation of carbohydrates at higher pH, through the addition of sodium hydroxide to allow for centrifugation of solidified cellular carbohydrates. The pH must then be corrected with the addition of hydrochloric acid before the final ultrafiltration and spray drying steps to produce the final dried protein powder product.
