Thank you for your interest in applying to be a Counselor at New Kent/Charles City, James City County 4-H Camp!
** The requirement is to have turned 15 by 9/30/2026**
After receiving your deposit, you'll need to proceed to 4-H Online to complete the necessary paperwork for your application. The link to access 4-H Online can be found under the paperwork tab above. Additionally, once your deposit is received, you'll receive email instructions outlining the application process.
All 18-year-old Counselors will need to complete and pass a background check. To do this, you will need to complete the steps below:
Enroll as a youth member in your unit’s camp club.
To Initiate the Background Check process for each teen.
The Extension office will fill out a Google form on your behalf with your legal name and email address
The State 4-H office will then initiate background checks
Teens will receive an email from Sterling Volunteers and must provide the necessary information to complete background checks.
Agents will have access to view the screening results in Sterling and are responsible for documenting the screening for 18-year-old camp counselors.
Note that these background checks will not be associated with or linked to 4-H online enrollment.
This process specifically applies to teens who will be 18 years old or older during their camp week this summer.
All teenage applicants undergo mandatory training, including the three references. Details about training dates and modules will be communicated to all applicants at a later time. Once you complete your registration, you'll receive a link to the reference forms.
You'll need to send this link to three references and request them to fill out the form, which should be returned to the office for review. Completion of these reference forms is necessary before camp begins.
