Emerging Technologies in Metals Mining WorKgroup

The Emerging Technologies in Metal Mining Workgroup is a Subcomittee of the Mine Safety and Health Advisory Committee to the NIOSH Office of Mine Safety and Health Research.

This workgroup is tasked with exploring the following questions and issuing a report back to NIOSH:

• To what extent will automation and smart technologies be implemented in metal mining and in what timeframe?
• What are the related emerging health & safety concerns?
• What gaps exist in occupational health & safety research related to automation and smart technologies?

A major effort to answer some of these questions and leverage stakeholder knowledge and input was the Emerging Technologies in Metal Mining Workshop held in Aurora, Colorado from September 10-11, 2018.
