Virginia 4-H Communications programs encourage students to develop research, organization, and public speaking skills. Each student makes a presentation or gives a speech in front of the class with a teacher, volunteer judge, or a pair of judges completing the score sheet. The students with the highest scores are invited to participate in the Central District 4-H Presentations Contest held in Appomattox each spring.
Many schools across the Commonwealth utilize the 4-H Presentations program to help meet SOL's for English in 4th grade. Students are tasked with giving a "how-to" speech. Each speech should have an introduction to catch the listener's attention and provide background information. During the body of the presentation, the student explains and demonstrates each step of the process. Each speech should also include a closing summary and an opportunity for listeners to ask questions.
Many 5th grade teachers use the 4-H Public Speaking program to help meet English SOL's. Students can make a speech on a topic of their choice or a topic assigned by their teacher. The 4-H Public Speaking program is also appropriate for middle and high school students.
Under 4-H rules, Presentations contestants must use visual aids. Public Speaking participants do not use visual aids.
