I was a Senior Graduate Teaching Assistant, (SGTA) from Spring 2024 through Spring 2025. In this role, I served as a peer mentor to other math graduate students and helped to organize seminars centered around professional development and outstanding pedagogy.
I was the president of the Virginia Tech Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics from Fall 2023 to Spring 2025. The goal of this organization is to bring together undergraduate and graduate students interested in creating and maintaining such a community on Tech's campus. Through AWM I've been able to organize events that help to promote women in mathematics.
The Blacksburg Math Circle is "a tuition-free enrichment program open to all students in grades 4-8 in Blacksburg and its vicinity who are interested in mathematics." I have been able to organize several sessions for it. In Fall 2023, Nora Heitzman-Breen and I led a session on "The Bridges of Konigsberg," and in Spring 2023, I organized a session on "The Fibbonacci Sequence" with Eyvi Palsson and Jose Gaitan.
In November 2024, I, along with Nora Heitzman-Breen and Julia Shapiro, organized an experience on "The Mathematics of Secret Messages" for the Virginia Tech Science Festival, which is a "family-friendly event reaches 4,000-6,000 visitors, including families, school field trips, and Virginia Tech students." We were able to share the fun of cryptography with kids of all ages through various ciphers and puzzles.
I did this again in November 2025 with Julia Shapiro and Paola Deniz Galvez. We organized an experience entitled "Sky High Math," where we encouraged the kids to solve a city-building puzzle based on the idea of Latin Square problems. The kids loved putting their puzzle-solving skills to the test!
