Faculty Advisor

Dr. Barbara Lockee is a professor of education specializing in Instructional Design and Technology. She earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Instructional Technology from Virginia Tech. To date she has authored or coauthored more than 90 journal articles, book chapters, invited columns and articles, and conference proceedings. She has also edited one book and developed software. She has contributed greatly to the field by presenting at many regional, national, and international conferences. In addition, she has been an invited speaker at a number of conferences and organizational meetings at the national and international level.

Dr. Lockee’s research focuses on effective instructional design strategies for distance learning environments. Recent publications in Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education and the Quarterly Review of Distance Education further a strong line of inquiry, as well as demonstrate continued contributions to the field. Her involvement in grant-funded projects also exemplifies commitment to the field. She has been an author and principal investigator (PI) or co-PI on a variety of federally funded grant projects. She recently served as a content specialist and advisory board member for a National Science Foundation grant related to Appalachian Information Technology Services. Dr. Lockee’s research and content expertise informs her teaching and advising activities at Virginia Tech. She has taught courses with topics ranging from trends and issues in instructional technology research to instructional design for distance education.

In addition to being actively involved in research and teaching, Dr. Lockee also engages in service activities. She reviews manuscripts for a variety of scholarly journals dedicated to instructional technology. She has held office positions in a number of professional associations, such as the Association for Educational Communications and Technology and the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Improvement. She has served on several accreditation teams for the Southern Association of College and Schools and has presented workshops for a number of K-12 school divisions and college associations. Finally, Dr. Lockee has received awards and honors in recognition of her exemplary professional contributions. The Institute for Distance and Distributed Learning recognized her contributions to and achievements in E-Learning in 2006. She received the Clifton Garvin Fellowship in 2002 and the XCaliber Award for Excellence in Courseware Development in 2000. Dr. Lockee’s contributions through teaching, research, and service enrich the Virginia Tech School of Education community.
