We were able to meet with our primary contact from the Lewis Gale Montgomery Hospital birthing center, Joy Gilman, on November 8th. She provided great insight and helped our group refine and explore the best options to reduce the false positive prevalence in their birthing center.
Following this meeting we continued our research and further developed our goals for our project. Ms. Gilman highlighted a few key areas in their screening process that we plan to improve and optimize which we believe will significantly decrease the false positive galactosemia test results due to human error.
We created a literature review, as well as an analysis of potential solutions, which outlines our research and goes into further detail about our solutions and the research that supports them. Both the literature review and the analysis of potential solutions can be found in our "Resources" page.
In the second semester we were able to setup a meeting with the Virginia State lab DCLS. We were able to discuss the process further with contacts there. We discussed our design and developed a feasible process for implementation at DCLS and LewisGale Hospital/hospitals across Virginia.
Our final design is an economically feasible quality assurance document designed to be implemented in LewisGale Montgomery Hospital. The document was designed to be translated to other hospitals in Virginia. This will improve the overall standard of newborn screening in Virginia. The Quality Assurance Document and Economic Analysis can be found in our "Resources" page.
Our group has really enjoyed working together this year!
