Getting Started

Below are some high-interest novels that other Fusion teachers have used as substitutes for the recommended novels. These alternative novels have been used with Thinking Reading.  When substituting books for Thinking Reading, it is critical to consider the characteristics provided by the authors of Fusion Reading for the ideal novels. The novels on the recommended list have been carefully chosen to engage struggling adolescent readers and motivate them to want to read.

• Teachers model expert reading behaviors and metacognitive strategic applications

• Will constitute about 5% of what students read

Also, you may consider the options below for a class-wide book study, if that is needed for your students. When choosing a book for independent reading, be sure to check the reading level for the student with the lowest reading level and match the book to that Lexile level (or whatever reading leveling system you use.)  This way every student can be successful with independent reading.  If you need help identifying Lexile levels of books, this site can help.  https://lexile.com
