Classes

Archery: Participants will learn the safe use and handling of bows and arrows. The certified instructor will conduct training and practice in proper methods of stance, firing, aiming, and care of the archery equipment. Instruction will be given in range procedures while firing at foam targets. 

STEM/Aerospace: Participants will learn about the different aspects of flight such as lift and velocity by building their own water rockets, participating in a drone obstacle course, and create their own engine propelled rockets ready for a spectacular launch! 

Riflery: Participants will be introduced to the safe use and handling of air rifle pellet guns. Also, participants will be afforded the opportunity to engage in riflery techniques utilizing .22 rifles. The certified instructor will conduct training in the safe methods of loading, aiming, and firing of guns at paper targets. *Closed-toe shoes required.

Gardening:  Participants will compare soil samples to evaluate the quality of soil for gardening, identify organisms living in the different components of soil, learn about the different vegetable families, dissect seeds, create seed bombs, learn about the biology of different vegetable plants, and after a gardening we will make fresh salsa! 

Performing Arts: Participants will be introduced to performance techniques including costuming, make-up, and use of props, utilizing their own skills and talents. Clowning, mime, puppetry, and plays will be demonstrated to help develop individual creativity, self-confidence and self-awareness as well as positive group interaction. Youth will learn how to apply their talents and skills by performing before others. 

Pond Ecology/Fishing:  Participants in this class will learn the basics of marine life which include seining, marine habitats, water quality, swamp life, and fishing Campers may catch a variety of species, including Small Mouth Bass, Large Mouth Bass, Catfish, Striped Bass, Perch, Blue Gill, and more. 

Outdoor Living Skills: Campers will go hands-on and wild in exploring how to survive the 4-H Center’s wilderness! Learn how to build campfires & shelters, knots, orienteering, animal tracking, and so much more! .

Shotgun: Participants will be introduced to the safe use and handling of youth model shotguns. The certified instructor will conduct training in the safe methods of loading, aiming, and firing of guns at clay targets; the class will focus on teaching youth how to safely shoot skeet. The criteria for placement or selection in the shotgun class are heavily tied to the camper’s previous skill or expertise or previous enrollment in the riflery class as a past camper. Participants must be 11 years of age by the start of camp to enroll 

Intro to Karate: Participants will learn basic moves and stances. These are the building blocks of everything they would do to achieve a black belt. Participants will also be introduced to concepts like kata (patterns of movement), choku-zuki (straight punch forward), and mae geri (front kick). 

Leathercraft: Participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of leather crafting and the proper usage and care of leather tools and construct leather project(s) during the class periods. A variety of projects will be provided including wrist bands, head bands, belts, key fobs, etc. Techniques on tooling and dyeing will also be addressed for a creative take-home item(s). 

Beginners Swimming: In this class campers will gain confidence and learn to feel comfortable in the water. Campers will first learn how to float and enjoy the water and then gradually begin to develop basic swimming skills and learn their first strokes. This class is full of water games and fun activities focused on developing and advancing the skill level of all beginner swimmers! 

Advanced Swimming: The goal of this class is to build upon campers basic swimming skills by providing additional guided practice. To enter this level students must be able to pass the advanced swim test. In this class students will learn to coordinate the front and back crawl strokes, begin orientation to deep water, refine key strokes, and be introduced to the butterfly stroke, open turns and diving. And don’t forget the games! 

Nature/Forestry  Venture out into woods for an exciting and hands on experience. Campers will have the opportunity to collect specimens from the woods of Airfield, learn about and touch native reptiles, and participate in forestry related science experiments while learning about the natural wonders of the world! 

Low Ropes/Challenge Course: Participants will be afforded the opportunity to participate in activities that will promote group interaction and positive individual self-worth in a structured noncompetitive environment. The elements include various trust and warm-up activities, combined with rope, cable, and wooden obstacles that can be physically and emotionally challenging. 

Canoeing: Participants will be introduced to canoeing terminology, equipment, life preservers, carrying and launching canoes, weight distribution, paddling locations, a variety of strokes, and will gain canoeing experience on the 105-acre Airfield Lake. 

Baking: Participants will learn the fundamentals of elementary baking methods to prepare delicious baked goods. Participants will use a conventional oven, make icing and cookie dough. Participants will learn valuable 4-H life skills which also result in delicious treats! 

Beekeeping: Participants will learn about bee biology, the equipment used for beekeeping, make their own mason bee beehives, and inspect our new beehives at the Airfield Apiary. With this newfound knowledge, participants will assess the health of the beehives and try to see if they can find the queen bee! Participants cannot sign up for this class if they possess a bee allergy.
