Practices are held at the Warrenton American Legion, Post 72.
Air Pistol focuses on all levels of air pistol through practices and competitions, and encourages leadership. Self discipline is developed through responsible behavior on the range. We shoot paper targets at 10 meters. We are looking to add silhouettes to our shooting skills during 2023.
Air Pistol is for ages 11 (as of Oct 1, 2022) to 18 years old and residents of Fauquier County. The group is first come, first served with a max of 16 members. If needed, we will add you to a waiting list.
No, due to generous grants through the NRA foundation, the group has equipment available for members to use. We use the Crosman 1701P air pistols for beginning members. It is an air charged single shot pistol. Members can advance to the Crosman 2300S CO2 charged pistol. New members are encouraged to use our equipment before investing in a personal air pistol.
You may use your own air pistol that meets the following criteria:
-Single shot .177 caliber
-Open sights: no scopes, diopter sights, or laser/red dot sights.
-Pistols must be transported in a case, action open, and have a blaze orange clear barrel indicator inserted.
Please check with one of the instructors before you purchase a pistol, if you wish to use it with our club.
Members should come ready to safely shoot. Comfortable clothing, closed toe shoes (no open toed sandals or crocks), and long hair will need to be pulled back from the face into an elastic band. Earrings are not recommended, or must be small stud style (no dangles or large styles).
Phones are permitted at practice but must be set to airplane mode while on the firing line/range.
Members are encouraged to bring a notebook to keep track of their scores during practice.
Safety glasses will be worn on the range. We will provide safety glasses if needed. We practice indoors, clear glasses would be the best choice. If the member wears glasses, please bring them.
Squad sessions usually last 90 minutes.
First time shooters with Bow Benders will have a safety briefing and demonstration before you can participate. It can be done before the first squad practice, provided you confirm with Mr. Cameron or Mr. Smith that you will be attending practice. (It means that we need to plan on getting there early enough to set up). Practices are usually 90 minutes long.
If there is a problem scheduling this briefing, please contact us to make other arrangements. This will be required even if you have shot at 4-H summer camps, another 4-H club, or any other youth program.
It is free to join and participate in the 4-H program. If the Club Member wishes to participate in any competition shoots there will be extra registration fees for those competitions. We do try to work with members that wish to participate in competitions so that the cost is not the deciding factor in their participation.
Air Pistol is a sub-group of the Bow Benders Archery Club. We are excited to offer this second discipline for Fauquier County 4-H Members. You do not have to participate in both Archery and Air Pistol. Members are welcome to choose one or both disciplines to participate.
You should contact our group leader Rob Cameron at fauquierairpistol@gmail.com.
For our new and younger members. We take safety to be the utmost priority. We ask that a parent or responsible sibling 16 or older that you trust to look after your child, remain at practice. This means on the property/parking lot of the American Legion or where ever we are meeting. If an Instructor must ask the member to take a seat over a safety violation, we can not split our attention to the spectator area behind me and the range in front of us. We will expect you or the designated person to be responsible for the member. Decisions of the instructors are final and not subject to debate during practice. Decisions can be discussed and reviewed after practices have concluded. Younger siblings are welcome to watch, but must not disturb practice.
After your first practice, if you are running a little late please come. If you can't make a practice, please use Sign Up Genius to cancel as soon as possible so another member might use the slot.
Lastly, Mr. Cameron is employed by a company that operates 24/365. His schedule is somewhat erratic, and sometimes does not get home as planned. Practices are subject to change and/or cancellation.
