Professional Development and Fellowship Opportunity for High School STEM Teachers


This Professional Development and Fellowship Opportunity for High School Science Teachers is supported by the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, with Dr. Saikat Basu (Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Founder-Director of the Biomedical and Bioinspired Fluid Dynamics Lab, at South Dakota State University) as the Principal Investigator.

As part of this initiative, the selected teachers will:


The fellowship will span approximately 2 weeks in June 2024, with stipend support, provided accommodation, meal reimbursements, and travel support. The activities will happen at the SDSU campus, in Brookings, SD. During the fellowship, the teachers will be provided office spaces at the on-campus Crothers Engineering Hall.


The fellows will be invited back to campus for a day-long visit during Fall with selected high school students from their institution(s). Through carefully curated research opportunities, these students will be incorporated into the South Dakota: High School – University Mechanism Aimed at raising Next-Gen Scientists program (or SoDak HUMANS, supported by the NSF award) for long-term mentorship and success in the STEM fields.


Fellowship amount: 
$1,000 as stipend + $350 for meals + on-campus housing. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.


Eligibility:       
The applicant should be a full-time/part-time high school science teacher, preferably at institutions located in the Tribal reservations or at institutions with a predominantly Native American population amongst the student body.
