AWT4CL Update for August 2023
Power of Micro-lessons: A new report from America Succeeds and Skillsline makes the case for more attention to durable skills, and they argue micro-lessons (e.g., ten minutes a day over multiple weeks) are effective for “Bridging the gap.” A detailed analysis is included in a dissertation on “Exploring nontechnical skills and their impact on workplace behavior” (Greif, 2022).
Design for Delight: Recognizing that “tomorrow’s workforce will have to continuously evolve to survive,” a recent case study on Intuit’s “Design for Delight” program. A crosswalk and analysis by America Succeeds indicates “within the first thirty minutes, students were already – maybe without even realizing it – demonstrating numerous Durable Skills.” What insights can we apply in our own programs?
Conscious Competence: One of the first steps to learning is awareness of what you don’t know. A new blog post on “Facilitating Conscious Competence” features this point by highlighting the conscious competence ladder and aligning it with rethinking cycle: All of the AWT4CL project-related blog posts are available at the following URL: https://sites.google.com/vt.edu/awt/blog
Learning Badges for Employability Skills: Following the idea that emerged from the July 2022 cohort meeting and January 2023 check-in, the AWT4CL cohort is pilot testing learning badges that mirror aspects of a case study with the Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems major at the University of California, Davis.
