AWT4CL Update for December 2022
Learning Badges: Building on the idea that surfaced in the July Cohort Connections meeting, we are continuing to explore the potential of awarding learning badges related to the APLU employability skills. If you are interested in piloting this with a small group of students, please contact Jama Coartney at jama@vt.edu
Call for Abstracts: The North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) organization is now accepting abstracts for presentation at its annual conference. Please consider sharing your ideas and insights. The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2023. For more information on the call, go to http://nactaabstracts.org/
Importance of Skill Development: A new Strada Education Network report highlights the importance of tagging skills to particular assignments. As noted in the report, “Finding ways to track and document career and life-relevant skills can help to motivate students and allow them to better communicate their qualifications.” Our AWT4CL project is working toward this end with collaborative leadership skills.
Smart Skills for Attention: In an intriguing new book titled The Job is Easy, The People are Not!, Prof. Loredana Padurean identifies the top 10 smart skills we all need to become better people: emotional maturity, managing up, validation, adaptability, productive inclusion, followership, multiple perspectives, humility, listening, and cognitive readiness. How might we better integrate these skills into our agriculture workforce training programs?
This work is supported by Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) 2020-67037-31032 1022287 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Inquiries about the project should be directed to Dr. Eric K. Kaufman, the primary investigator. Additional information about the grant is available online at the USDA-NIFA project portal.
