4-H is America’s largest youth development organization—empowering nearly six million young people with the skills and abilities to be resilient, adaptable and ready for work and life. To be Beyond Ready.
4-H opportunities empower youth to develop practical life skills while cultivating confidence, critical thinking, and self-awareness. Youth learn by doing and are given opportunities to explore new experiences, collaborate and connect with peers, and serve their community while pursuing their passions.
4‑H is delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. For more than 100 years, 4‑H has welcomed young people of all beliefs and backgrounds, giving kids a voice to express who they are and how they make their lives and communities better.
Virginia 4-H programs are facilitated through the Virginia Cooperative Extension- a collaboration between Virginia Tech and Virginia State University. Youth have opportunities to engage at the local, district, state, and national levels through clubs, competitions, camps, and conferences!
4-H has something for everyone! Check out our seasonal offerings and year-round clubs (found on individual pages of this site) for fun ways to get started today!

I pledge my head to greater thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to greater service,
and my health to better living
for my club, my community,
my country, and my world.
Associate 4-H Extension Agent, Appomattox County
Alex grew up in the Amherst County 4-H program and served two summers as a Holiday Lake summer staff member while earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Rochester.
After graduation, Alex worked in higher education admissions, supporting students as they explored and pursued their academic goals. Over the years, Alex cultivated a passion for youth development- specifically empowering youth to build confidence, leadership, self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking, and strong interpersonal skills.
Today, Alex serves as the Appomattox County 4-H Extension Agent where she strives to provide local youth with opportunities to 'learn by doing' while 'making the best better'!
