What is 4-H?
4‑H is delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. The goal of 4-H is to teach youth citizenship, leadership, and life skills. For more than 100 years, 4‑H has welcomed young people of all beliefs and backgrounds, giving kids a voice to express who they are and how they make their lives and communities better.
The Eleanor Hazel 4-H After School Program:
The Eleanor Hazel 4-H After School Program aims to offer free high-quality afterschool programming to youth that would not have the ability to participate in extracurricular activities outside of school. Participants will meet weekly for a 6 session series to engage in educational STEM activities to help spark and cultivate a passion for learning.
Meetings:
The Eleanor Hazel 4-H After School Program is currently offered to seven of the elementary schools in the county - C. Hunter Ritchie, Claude Thompson, Grace Miller, Greenville, H.M. Pearson, M.M. Pierce, and Mary Walter. Students will meet on a designated day of the week depending on their school.
Parent (or Grandparent, Aunt, Uncle, etc.) Involvement:
We welcome parents, teen siblings, and other adult family members to sign up to help with this program. An extra pair of hands is always helpful during hands-on activities, and volunteers play an important role in supporting youth learning and engagement. If you are interested in volunteering your time to help out with this program, please contact Nicole Hollins nhollins@vt.edu.
After School Activities:
The Eleanor Hazel 4-H After School Program will consist of four 6-session series at each school centered around different themes.
