The Eleanor Hazel
4-H After School Program
What is 4-H?
4‑H is delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. The goal of 4-H is to teach youth citizenship, leadership, and life skills. For more than 100 years, 4‑H has welcomed young people of all beliefs and backgrounds, giving kids a voice to express who they are and how they make their lives and communities better.
The Eleanor Hazel 4-H After School Program:
The Eleanor Hazel 4-H After School Program aims to offer free high-quality afterschool programming to youth that would not have the ability to participate in extracurricular activities outside of school. Participants will meet weekly for a 6 session series to engage in educational STEM activities to help spark and cultivate a passion for learning.
Meetings:
The Eleanor Hazel 4-H After School Program will be offered to five of the elementary schools in the county - M.M. Pierce, Mary Walter, Grace Miller, H.M. Pearson, and Claude Thompson Elementary Schools. Students will meet on a designated day of the week depending on their school and the series. In the event of school closures or half days a make-up session will be utilized on Fridays.
Parent (or Grandparent, Aunt, Uncle, etc.) Involvement:
4-H Club Membership is free thanks to the 100's of volunteers that offer their time to organize activities for our clubs. Volunteers help with leading kids in hands-on activities. If you are interested in volunteering your time to help out with this program, please contact Nicole Hollins nhollins@vt.edu.
After School Activities:
The Eleanor Hazel 4-H After School Program will consist of four 6-session series at each school centered around different themes. Although the program is still in the early stages of development, possible themes to look forward to include agriculture, energy sources, robotics, outdoor explorers, and more!
