Spatially Explicit Capture Recapture (SECR) Techniques (1:00 - 5:00)

In-person or online, Best Western PLUS

This half-day workshop will provide background information on the underlying theory behind spatially explicit capture recapture (SECR/SCR) models. We will discuss the advantages of the SECR/SCR approach over traditional mark-recapture. We will cover the basic parameters estimated and the built in detection models (e.g. learned responses, groups, time, heterogeneity) plus built in density models. We will demonstrate how to run models in freely downloadable, windows-based software (Program DENSITY), and in the secr package in R. We will give examples of different types of species and data types needed to run SECR models. We will cover construction of input files, and discuss interpretation of output files. Finally, we will give an overview of extensions of SECR/SCR models.

The cost of this workshop is $35. (Presented by Dr. Marcella Kelly and Robert Nipko, WHAPA Lab, Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Conservation, Virginia Tech)
