Library Activity: Sign up for the Public Library summer reading program

As we prepare for the summer reading months. I would love everyone to sign up for the summer reading program via the Public Library. We usually do this in library class around this time of year. As many of you know the public library has many great summer reading activities every year as well as a means for keeping track of everything you read this summer, and it is oh so important to keep reading!

Though the program will be completely online this summer the librarians have worked hard to create inventive and fun online activities and programs for the summer. Below is a video from Mrs. Brown from the public library talking about the summer reading program and showing how you can create an account. Here is the link to sign up http://voorpl.ny10.readsquared.com/ Happy Reading!

Copy of K-2 summer reading program.MOV

P.S . As many of you know I am having a baby, any day now. If you have questions about signing up or logging on, and I am not responding within a day, it may be that my new baby boy has arrived! At that point please contact the public librarians for any questions you may have about the Summer Reading Program.

Art Activity - Remember the Brave

The red poppy is a beautiful flower that is a symbol honoring the brave soldiers who lost their lives in the military. Red poppies are often worn on Memorial Day to remember those who fought for our freedom.

Let's Draw a Poppy!

Below is a video about how to draw an easy Poppy. As with any video, you may pause it at any time if needed.

Materials: White paper (I used copy paper), crayons (red, black, yellow and green), pencil and sharpie (optional).

Below are different ways to draw poppies on your white paper.

OPTIONAL - You can turn your drawing into a Windsock!

Make streamers to attach on the back (bottom) of your drawing. You can cut paper, use yarn, crepe paper, ribbon (I used old wrapping paper). After gluing them to the bottom, add glue to one side of your drawing.

Roll up your drawing so it looks like a tube. You may have to hold the seam for a couple of minutes. Add a handle on top. I used the same wrapping paper. Let dry and hang! Please tell me about your artwork on Flipgrid!

Library Activity - Bravery

Memorial Day is about honoring those brave members of the military who gave their lives for our country and our freedom. Library Activity: Synesthesia

The artist Kandinsky had a condition called Synesthesia which causes people to mix up their senses. You may see sounds as colors or shapes (like Kandinsky did) or smell colors or experience senses in a different way. I think it would be pretty amazing to spend some time as someone with synesthesia and experiences the senses in a different way. What a good reminder that we all experience this life differently.

For this week I want you to find out what color your name is. There is a type of synesthesia (called grapheme-color synesthesia) where you see letters as colors. Click on the link below, type your name into the name box and see what colors your name is. Color the block picture you see or color any picture you would like with the colors of your name. Share the colors of your name and your picture with me on your gradel level flipgrid or via email. Have a fabulous week!

For this week's activities please begin by reading/listening to Inky the Octopus by Erin Guendelsberger

Inky the Octopus.webm

Art Activity

Let's Create a Found Object Octopus!

Octopus are VERY smart!

Inky used his "smarts" to find his way back to the ocean.

"Found objects" can be "found" anywhere and have been used in many different types of artwork including paintings and sculptures. Famous artists in history that used "found objects" include Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp.

Today there are artists all over the world who use objects found in nature, around their homes or even in the trash, and use them in their artwork.

Now it's your turn to use your brains and creativity to find objects around your home to create an octopus.

Step One: Find a place to create your found object artwork.

Step Two: Think about what you might need for the octopus head, arms (octopus have 8), eyes, and maybe even suckers.

Step Three: Look around your home or backyard. You can ask a family member to help.

Step Four: Using your creativity and imagination, create your own found object octopus art.

Step Five: Take a picture or show it off on Flipgrid.

What did you make your Octopus out of? Where did you find the objects you used ? What is your octopus' name?

I can't wait to hear all about it!!

Below are examples of how different artists have used found objects for their sculptures.

These are my two "Found Object" Octopus.

The one on the left is named "Baggie". You can probably guess why.

The one on the right is named "Fruitopus". She is missing a couple of "arms", so I am imagining that they are hiding behind her body. (Seriously, my kid's and I ate them this morning with breakfast.) Oh well.

Please take some time over this week to work on each activity (Art, Music & Library) and share your work via your grade level flipgrid. However, for this week, it is important that you EMAIL your MUSIC work to Mrs. Beauregard (cbeauregard@voorheesville.org)!

For all the activities below please start by listening or reading Arnie the Doughnut,

written by Laurie Keller and read by Chris O'Dowd.

Art Activities - Choose One

Materials:

Paper, pencil, sharpie (optional), coloring method of your choice (crayon, marker, colored pencils, etc.) If you choose to use paint, you will need a good quality paper.

Let's get started and create our own Doughnut!

I am going to use a circle shape for my doughnut (I love Arnie's roundness). However, you can choose another shape if you want (oval, circle, a square with rounded edges etc.).

Draw a circle in the center of your paper. About the size of a large grapefruit. Find the center of the circle and draw a smaller circle inside.

If you want to trace something round, go ahead.

Optional: if you draw a line in the center of the doughnut it creates a more 3-D doughnut. See example below.

Add your favorite doughnut toppings. Sprinkles, chocolate etc. Use the idea sheet below if you want.

Want to make your doughnut have a personality? Give it eyes, lashes, a nose, mouth, freckles, glasses etc. Use your imagination.

Does your doughnut has something to say? Add a speech bubble.

Color your doughnut!

or

Artie the Doughnut Glasses

The Rainbow Connection

Library Activity

This week I thought we would try a Maker Space activity. I have a lot of Maker space toys in the library but "Maker Space" really just means using your hands (and often you creativity and imagination) to create something. I would like you to create a color wheel. A color wheel is often used in Art, it uses different sections of color to show the relationship between colors. You can turn a rainbow into a color wheel by taking the colors and arranging them onto a circle. I would like you to get creative and find things around your house, or your yard , and create a color wheel with them. Below are a few examples! Please show me your color wheel on flipgrid or send a picture to my email.

This is just an example of a color wheel

Here is an example made out of food

Here is one made out of all kinds of household items

These are two examples I made, one of my tee shirts and for the other I used my son's stuffed animals! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Music Activity🌈

  1. Watch the Rainbow Rainbow video.

  2. Complete the activities on the google doc provided. If you don't have printing capabilities, please show us your work on a plain piece of paper! That works too!πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

A Hare of Our Own Illustration

Materials:

Paper, pencil, sharpie (optional), coloring method of your choice (crayon, marker, colored pencils, etc.) If you choose to use paint, you will need a good quality paper.
Do you know the difference between a hare and a rabbit? I'll tell you soon.
Let's get started!

I am using copy paper (since that is what I have handy).

I am going to draw the head of the hare on the bottom of my paper. I willl make two versions.
On one, I am going to make an oval (you can choose to make a circle).
On the other, I'm going to draw a curved line, like a rainbow.

I made a neck for the drawing on the right by adding a short lines on each side of the head. See below.

Add a mouth so our hare can eat. You can draw a letter J under the nose, then a backwards J, right next to it.
If you have a special way of making the mouth, you may do that instead.

Add the eyes and whiskers.

Now, for the ears.

A hare has longer ears and bigger feet than a rabbit.
For the ears, I am going to draw a long, stretched out ovals with pointy tips on the top. I think it looks like a long, stretched-out football shape. I am also going to put a smaller "football" shape in the middle of the ears.
Anita Jeram also added short lines on the face and body to make the hares look more furry.

You can outline (optional) and color in your hare illustration! If you outline with a permanent marker, make sure you put another sheet of paper under your drawing, just in case the marker goes through the paper.

Color you hare! We used crayon.

Library Activity

Guess How Much I Love You is one of my favorite bedtime stories to read with my son Arlo. Though it looks like this book is about rabbits it is actually about Hares. They are similar animals but not quite the same. For your library activity this week I want you to use one of the resources below to look up a type of Hare. Pick either a Snowshoe Hare or a Jackrabbit, and share 3 facts with me that you found on flipgrid. Let me know which resource you used! Happy Information hunting!
