Library Activity: Sign up for the public library's summer reading program

As we prepare for the summer reading months. I would love everyone to sign up for the summer reading program via the Public library. We usually do this in library class around this time of year. As many of you know the public library has many great summer reading activities every year as well as a means for keeping track of everything you read this summer, and it is oh so important to keep reading!

Though the program will be completely online this summer the librarians have worked hard to create inventive and fun online activities and programs for the summer. Below is a video from Mrs. Brown from the public library talking about the summer reading program and showing how you can create an account. Here is the link to sign up http://voorpl.ny10.readsquared.com/ Happy Reading!

Copy of 3-5 summer reading.MOV

P.S . As many of you know I am having a baby, any day now. If you have questions about signing up or logging on, and I am not responding within a day, it may be that my new baby boy has arrived! At that point please contact the public librarians for any questions you may have about the Summer Reading Program.

Art Activity - Remembering the Brave

The red poppy is a beautiful flower that is a symbol honoring the brave soldiers who lost their lives in the military. Red poppies are often worn on Memorial Day to remember those who fought for our freedom.

Let's Draw a Poppy!

Below is a video about how to draw an easy Poppy. As with any video, you may pause it at any time if needed.

Materials: White paper (I used copy paper), crayons (red, black, yellow and green), pencil and sharpie (optional).

Below are different ways to draw poppies on your white paper.

OPTIONAL - You can turn your drawing into a Windsock!

Make streamers to attach on the back (bottom) of your drawing. You can cut paper, use yarn, crepe paper, ribbon (I used old wrapping paper). After gluing them to the bottom, add glue to one side of your drawing.

Roll up your drawing so it looks like a tube. You may have to hold the seam for a couple of minutes. Add a handle on top. I used the same wrapping paper. Let dry and hang! Please tell me about your artwork on Flipgrid!

Library Activity: Bravery

Memorial Day is about honoring those brave members of the military who gave their lives for our country and our freedom. Bravery can mean a lot of different things, and important thing to remember that being brave does not mean not being scared, being brave means doing the right thing even when you ARE scared. For this weeks library activity please tell me about a time that you were brave,or that someone you know was brave. Share your story with me on flipgrid or email me a written version, and as always Have a fabulous week!

Art Activites - Computer Kandinsky or Kandinsky Drawing

Kandinsky had a condition called synaesthesia. This condition allows a person to enjoy sounds and color with more than one senses at a time. Kandinsky saw music as different colors and shapes. Kandinsky is an Abstract Expressionist Artist. Abstract Expressionist art is art that it has NO recognizable subject.

Title: Composition 8, by Kandinsky

Let's Begin!

Create on Chrome Music Lab-Kandinsky and watch your design come to life. For a demonstration of what you can do, check out the Youtube link below from 0:00-4:00.

Then go to https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/kandinsky/ and have some fun.

Please show me what you made on Flipgrid or email me a photo.

I can't wait to see what you create!

OR

Kandinsky's artwork was how he saw music.

Materials: Paper, pencil, Sharpie (optional), coloring method of your choice. I'm using crayon.

Start with a fresh sheet of paper. I am using copy paper. Take your marker or pencil of choice, and let's Draw!

Draw at least 1 long Squiggle Line

Draw at least 1 long Zig-Zag Line

Draw at least 1 Hashtag Style Lines

Draw at least 3-4 Different Shapes

Draw some straight lines too.

Then, color in all the spaces enclosed by the lines (and outside too, if you want). And behold! You’re an Abstract Expressionist Artist !

Draw your lines and shapes.

Outline your lines and shapes.

Color!

Music Activity

What does music LOOK like to you?

Directions: Get ready to experience the exact music Vasya Kandinsky heard!!!

  1. Get a piece of paper and some crayons, colored pencils, or markers........................................... or paint (with an adults permission).

  2. Watch the clip below. Pause the video and listen to the music again to give yourself enough time to make a picture of what you hear. Think about what colors you hear and what shapes you hear as you make your picture.

  3. Show us your picture on Flipgrid or email your picture to us!

Library Activity: Synesthesia

The artist Kandinsky had a condition called Synesthesia which causes people to mix up their senses. You may see sounds as colors or shapes (like Kandinsky did) or smell colors or experience senses in a different way. I think it would be pretty amazing to spend some time as someone with synesthesia and experiences the senses in a different way. What a good reminder that we all experience this life differently.

For this week I want you to find out what color your name is. There is a type of synesthesia (called grapheme-color synesthesia) where you see letters as colors. Click on the link below, type your name into the name box and see what colors your name is. Color the block picture you see or color any picture you would like with the colors of your name. Share the colors of your name and your picture with me on your gradel level flipgrid or via email. Have a fabulous week!

What color is your name?

My first name Annie is Red, Green, Green, White, Yellow

VES Says, "Thank You Essential Workers!"

Well done VES!!!

Week 6: May 11 - 15

Please take some time over this week to work on each activity (Art, Music & Library) and share your work via your grade level Flipgrid.

For the following activities please begin by reading/listening to Inky the Octopus by Erin Guendelsberger

Inky the Octopus.webm

Art Activity

Let's Create a Found Object Octopus!

Octopus are VERY smart!

Inky used his "smarts" to find his way back to the ocean.

"Found objects" can be "found" anywhere and have been used in many different types of artwork including paintings and sculptures. Famous artists in history that used "found objects" include Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp.

Today there are artists all over the world who use objects found in nature, around their homes or even in the trash, and use them in their artwork.

Now it's your turn to use your brains and creativity to find objects around your home to create an octopus.

Step One: Find a place to create your found object artwork.

Step Two: Think about what you might need for the octopus head, arms (octopus have 8), eyes, and maybe even suckers.

Step Three: Look around your home or backyard. You can ask a family member to help.

Step Four: Using your creativity and imagination, create your own found object octopus art.

Step Five: Take a picture or show it off on Flipgrid.

What did you make your Octopus out of? Where did you find the objects you used ? What is your octopus' name?

I can't wait to hear all about it!!

Below are examples of how different artists have used found objects for their sculptures.

These are my two "Found Object" Octopus.

The one on the left is named "Baggie". You can probably guess why.

The one on the right is named "Fruitopus". She is missing a couple of "arms", so I am imagining that they are hiding behind her body. (Seriously, my kid's and I ate them this morning with breakfast.) Oh well.

Music Activity 🐙💦🎵🐙

Directions: Choose one or both of the activities.

  1. Watch the videos below.

The Beatles were a famous group from Liverpool, England, who defined the course of Rock 'N Roll in the 1960's. Find two musical differences and two musical similarities between these two recordings of "Octopus's Garden". Describe you answers on Flipgrid or email your answers to us.

2. Watch the instruction video and then complete this octopus music alphabet sheet. Show us your answers on Flipgrid, or email us!

Watch these directions first.

This week I thought we would do another maker space/ building activity. Frank Llyod Wright was an incredibly famous architect. Below are some examples of some of his buildings. As the book said, and as you can see in the pictures, Frank Llyod Wright is known for incorporating nature into his building.

This week I would like you to pretend you are an architect and build a building, use anything you want to do so: legos, blocks, sticks, stones, anything at all, if the weather is nice see if you can build it outside using the nature around you in the design. You can also draw a building, see if your drawing can incorporate the world around the building into the design. Most of all have fun! Send me a flipgrid video or a picture of what you have created, have a great week!

Music Activity

Dear Mr. Henshaw, by Beverly Cleary

Leigh Botts (the main character) is inspired by a book by his favorite author, Boyd Henshaw, and decides to write to him about it. At first, Leigh doesn't receive a response, but when Mr. Henshaw finally writes back, our story really begins.

What does inspire mean? To motivate, to influence, to encourage, to be uplifting.

Recently there have been many in our community that have been inspiring.

The essential personnel are the people in our community that are keeping us safe, comfortable, and healthy.

These people include doctors, nurses, first responders, grocery store workers, postal employees and truck drivers that deliver supplies.

Art & Library Activity - Postcard or Drawing

Creating a postcard to someone who inspires us during this time in history.

A postcard is a card for sending a message by mail without an envelope, typically having a photograph or other illustration on one side.

Let's Make a Postcard!

Materials: Empty cereal box, paper, crayons (markers), pencil, glue and scissors

In this video, I (and my daughter) will demonstrate how to make a postcard from an empty cereal.

Please feel free to pause or fast-forward through the video as needed.

You may also choose to make a picture on regular paper instead of a postcard.

Ideas of what to write on the postcard

Thank you so much!

I am so grateful.

We all really appreciate what you do..

I (We) cannot thank you enough.

Thank you so much for keeping us well.

Thank you for all your hard work.

When you are done creating your postcard please take a picture. You can post the picture on flipgrid, but please also email it to Mrs. Beauregard (you are also welcome to email it to all of us to "hand it in" this week). She would love a picture of both the drawing and the message.

Then, let's spread some love and encouragement! If you would like to mail your letter or card to someone special like a family member or friend who is an essential worker, please feel free to do that. Also remember our senior citizens and people living in nursing homes, many of them can no longer have visitors and are feeling lonely. They would love to recieve a picture or letter from you! If you do not have access to postage stamps and/or you do not have someone that you would like to send your letter or card to, we can do it for you. Please drop off your letter/card at the Voorheesville Public Library on Friday, 4/24 between 10-4. A labelled bin with a lid will be placed under the enclosed area in front of the front entrance to the library. The public librarian, Mrs. Brown, will make sure to collect these letters/cards after 4:00 on Friday. Mrs. Brown will box them up and mail them to local hospitals and nursing homes, etc.

Tips:

Only sign the postcard with your first name.

Please practice safety while dropping off letters, wear gloves and/ or use hand sanitizer when opening and closing the bin and give others space if they arrive at the same time! Stay safe and healthy.

Earth Day Inspired Owl

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22. Established in 1970, Earth Day is a day of education and awareness about environmental issues. The day was intended to demonstrate support for environmental protection of our planet.

Endangered Animals

An endangered animal is one that is at risk of becoming extinct (no longer being in existence).

Dinosaurs are the largest group of animals to have ever become extinct.

Burrowing Owls are considered endangered in Canada and threatened in Mexico. They are also considered endangered, threatened or of special concern in nine U.S. states.

Materials:

Paper, pencil, sharpie (optional), coloring method of your choice (crayon, marker, colored pencils, etc.) If you choose to use paint, you will need a good quality paper.

How To Draw A Simple Burrowing Owl

Draw an oval. My oval is a little thinner at the top, for the head. I also slanted mine a bit.

Add a triangle beak.

Add some long legs.

Add a long stretched out V for the Owl's brow.

An oval wing.

And pointy tallons (toes). I didn't leave enough room at the bottom of my paper. Oops.

Two round eyes.

Half an oval on the other side of it's body.

Add curved lines for soft textured feathers.

Want to try something different?

Turn your owl into an Earth Day poster.

Create an owl with fun colors.

Add different designs and patterns to your owl.

Recycled Cardboard Tube Owl

Recycling is changing waste materials into new materials and objects.

In this video I will demonstrate how to make an owl using a cardboard tube.

Please feel free to pause or fast-forward through the video as needed.

Library Activity

This week for Library you have a couple of options. If you want to you can participate in another research question. The book Hoot is about a special type of owl called the burrowing owl. If you would like you can use the resources below to learn more about Burrowing Owls. Like last week let me know 3 interesting facts that you have found about Burrowing owls.

Use either of these links to learn more about the Burrowing Owl, share what you learn on flipgrid

If you would like to try something different, try out this Maker Space activity. Create your own Origami Owl book mark! Click on the picture below for instructions.

Click on the picture of the owl bookmark to get to the instructions. I made this little guy, it was a lot of fun! I didn't have any origami paper at home, but I just cut a piece of paper into a square (to make sure it was a square I cut what I thought was a square and folded it diagonally corner to corner, I then trimmed the sides until it was even). Then I colored one side of it, and was good to go! Share your origami owl bookmark with me on flipgrid! Enjoy :)

Art Activity

Let's Make a Color Spinner!

It may not hypnotize, but it looks like magic!

Materials: Thick paper (tag board), coloring method of your choice in primary colors (red, yellow and blue), something round to trace, pencil, scissor, and ruler (optional).

How to Make Secondary Colors by Using Primary Colors.

Red + Yellow = Orange

Yellow + Blue = Green

Blue + Red = Purple

Let's Get Started!

Gather your materials. I don't have tagboard but I have a paper plate! (Close Enough)

Using a pencil, trace something round onto your tagboard. I used a tape roll.

Cut out your circle.

Fold your circle in half. It can be a challenge since there are no corners to match-but do your best.

Now, fold your circle in the other direction. You should have a + in the middle of your circle.

Go over the creases with pencil (optional).

Choose the Secondary color you want to make. I want Orange, so I chose yellow and orange.

Color in the circle with alternating colors.

Now, poke a hole in the middle of your spinner. Ask an adult if you need help. I did it with a pencil.

Put the pencil tip through the middle of the spinner.

Spin the pencil between your hands. Do you see the orange?

I flipped the circle over and did the same thing with yellow and blue to make green. I didn't like this result as much. Maybe you can think of a way to make it work better?

Want to try something different? How about making a rainbow disc spinner?
