John Kasper Arrested
The Atlanta Daily World posted an article titled "Kasper Jailed on Riot Charges: Nashville School Crisis Laid to Segregationist" in 1957. John Kasper was a militant far-right activist who became involved in violent campaigns against African Americans and desegregation during the civil rights period. He was also an active member of the Ku Klux Klan, a violent hate organization against African Americans. John Kasper was Nashville's biggest problem during integration. He was known to lead riots, protests, and many other things. His goal was to stop the integration plan from happening. He would hold meetings for white people to come and encourage them to stand with him in his protests. He was also known to show up to African-American meetings and cause trouble for them. He had made many different threats to many different people, including bomb threats. This article included the mayor's point of view to try and calm the public and get them to support the integration. By posting the mayor's point of view in the news paper, it help send the message to the citizens. It also shows what length the mayor will go to and will not hesitate to arrest people who disrupt the integration process. After a bomb went off at Hattie-Cotton Elementary School, cops rushed to arrest Kasper. He was fined on many different charges and was sent to jail to await his trial. The Mayor and prosecutor's main job and concern was to put a stop to the protests and everything that was causing it to be an unpeaceful integration for the children. The arrest of Kasper sparked around twenty more arrests by cops. These people were arrested and charged with fines. After these events, School integration went smoother and desegregation in Nashville was making progress again.
