Nashville's Integration Plan
Nashville's Integration Plan
Jet is an American magazine that releases articles on news, culture, and entertainment related to the African American community. It was formed in 1951 by a company in Chicago, Illinois called the Johnson Publishing Company. They spread all kinds of different information across the country. In 1954, when the Civil Rights Movement started, It was a way for everyone around the country to stay informed on all of the different protests and important decisions that were made. They came out with a small article in 1958, called "Nashville To Integrate Schools A Grade A Year." This section states the plan that Nashville school boards have adopted to integrate the schools as peacefully as possible. Their plan involves integrating one new grade a year, starting with first grade. Many people came out and said that they were opposed to this plan. The state of Kentucky also gave Tennessee some backlash for their decision to move on with this plan. Jet magazine is showing us that African Americans are against the stair stepping plan and how they are wanting to keep everyone in the country informed on what is happening. During the council meeting, one African American council member voted against the plan, making it a seven to one vote. His name was Coyness Ennix and he advocated for the plan not to pass becuase he knew it was not going to help with desegregation. Many people were against the plan, but the council's final decision is what stuck.
