Chapter 1

Chapter One - A New Start

It was a warm summer evening right before sunset. A mother had just opened up the neighborhood’s newspaper from that morning she hadn’t had the chance to read. She had always wanted her rather antisocial daughter to be a part of a club or activity with other kids her age. She wanted her to actually talk to others and make friends. To this mother’s surprise, a rare opportunity arises, one being advertised in the paper. She calls her daughter over.

“Kim, honey, could you come over here! Look what’s being advertised in the newspaper!” The daughter, a young teenage girl with violet eyes and rather short black hair, enters the living room to see what her mother had called her there for.

“What, mom?” Her mother points to a certain spot in the paper. A headline read, “Enrolling Young Detectives Today!!” Kim picks up the newspaper. She starts to read the article her mother took interest in.

“Doug Detective Academy…”

“It’s a detective school for teens like you! It’s perfect for you to participate in an activity and a way for you to make friends!” Her mother’s enthusiasm made her feel a bit queasy. Strangers… Kim thought to herself.

“If I sign you up, you will be leaving to go tomorrow at noon, I will drop you off and make sure you have everything with you that you packed. But it’s up to you to decide if you want to go or not.” Kim started to think. She had been calling off any activity that gave her the opportunity to socialize with others for too long. Kim is homeschooled, afterall. She wanted to do something that would make her mother happy for once. Detective academy… Kim was really good at solving mysteries. She was able to always find and remember where she left the things she was looking for by using clues.

“I will think about it, mom.” Kim said. She cut out the article and put it in her pocket for her to look at it if she wanted to decide whether or not she wanted to go. Soon, it was dinner time and Kim’s mother had cooked her favorite meal, spaghetti with meatballs. Still Kim was deciding whether she wanted to go to the detective academy or not. It meant possibly moving out of the house for a few months. If I do this, it will make my mother proud of me. I could also make friends there too. Kim thought to herself. She had made up her mind after all that thinking. Then, Kim told her mother her decision.

“Mom, I think I have made up my mind. I will go because you want the best for me. I feel like this will be a new experience for me and it will make you proud. But if anything goes wrong, then I will call you to pick me up, and then you will bring me home, okay?” Kim’s Mother looked at her and smiled.

“Okay that's totally fine with me!” She says with a smile on her face. By the time of the next morning, Kim has already packed up her stuff to go. Kim’s mother was in the car waiting for her. Then, Kim got in the car and they drove to the detective academy.
