Since its inception almost three decades ago, VIS took a vision that values, individual interests, and talents should be fostered and continually challenged. We are a school that shares a strong connection with Laos, its cultures and the local community.
Starting September 2018, VIS invited the Perkins Eastman firm to conduct a programming exercise to help us evaluate the school facilities, the extent to which they support our work towards reaching our mission, and to develop a master plan. The plan aimed to maximize the existing site, while upgrading and constructing new buildings aligned with the VIS Core: Mission, Vision, Values and Destiny Plans.
In September 2019, VIS selected the EIW architectural firm to develop the concept designs for the Campus Gateway Project.
This journey started in the 2016-2017 school year and has involved a large number of people: past and present members of our community and external consultants. Below is a short summary of how we have arrived at this point in our journey - acknowledging some of those who have been involved along the way.
In 2016 the Board considered whether VIS should stay on the existing campus or plan to move at some time in the future. Having decided to stay, the Campus Development Committee started a discussion as to possible locations for an Arts facility on campus which eventually led to the appointment of Perkins Eastman in May 2018 to undertake the development of a Campus Master Plan to guide future building projects.

During SY 2018-19, Perkins Eastman conducted over 30 different workshop sessions over the course of the year with staff, students, board members and others, across disciplines, functions and interests to gain an understanding of the spatial needs of VIS moving forward. There are too many to list every name, but they can be found at the back of the Master Plan document. In May 2019, the Board accepted the Master Plan from Perkins Eastman and agreed to move forward with the preliminary design of a modified phase 1 – what is now called the Campus Gateway Project.
