You can help your child to develop good speech and language skills by being a good speech and language model. Use language that is at their level. Rephrase what they have said, making it into a more correct or adult form. Expand what they have said to show them how to increase their utterance length and to share in their interests. Be an equal partner in talking: follow their lead and let them choose the topic. Take turns. Get down to their physical level and be face to face. When they are reading or watching a movie, ask them lots of questions such as, "Who is the story about?", "What happened to the character?", "Where does it take place?", etc. Try to keep the questions open-ended in order to allow for expansion of their thoughts. Have fun!
