Zdeněk Valenta graduated from Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague in 1988 with major in Probability and Mathematical Statistics (Masters degree).

After successfully completing his studies he began working as mathematician-statistician at the Department of Preventive Medicine of the Institute for Clinical & Experimental Medicine in Prague. There he was primarily responsible for data analysis of the Czech component of international WHO-coordinated project MONICA aiming at globally reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

In 1990 he paid a brief visit to MONICA Data Centre in Helsinki, Finland, where he worked jointly on analysing mortality data from the MONICA project.

The following year he graduated from Masters Course in Medical Statistics at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, U.K., at the department headed by prof. Stewart Pocock, well-known for his expertise in statistical methodology used in analysing data from clinical trials.

The first six months of 1995 he was honoured a Visiting Fulbright Scholar fellowship at Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention, Stanford University, U.S.A. His fellowship was supported by the U.S. Fulbright Agency.

He continued in furthering his professional background by successfully completing Masters Course in Mathematical Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1997, and finally by successfully completing PhD Program in Biostatistics at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., in 2002.

Since 2002 he worked as a research scientist at the Department of Medical Informatics of the Institute of Computer Science at the Czech Academy of Sciences (ICS CAS). He served as the head of the Department in 2011-2013.

In 2006 he successfully habilitated at the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague as Associate Professor of Medical Statistics..
