Two weeks before the 2019-2020 school year began, I was asked to become the Science Department Chair for my school. I was surprised and pleased. I knew I wanted to lead by merging my experiences in industry and what I have learned as a TLIIST Fellow teacher-leader. In department meetings, I try to be efficient, clear and concise. Due to Covid-19 I am also facilitating online department meetings where my colleagues can: check-in, share ideas, discuss common issues, share resources and problem solve together. I am looking forward to using this position as a way to become a better teacher-leader thereby helping my school community.

I moved across the city and therefore I decided to change schools. My current school is much larger than my former school. Being a TLIIST fellow allowed me to have a much easier transition. The content knowledge, leadership skills and the support network that is in-built in TLIIST was essential in my smooth transition and in my successes at this new school. I am thankful to have the other master teacher fellows that inspire, support me.

The Action Research Project through TLIIST has given me a structured way to reflect on issues that affect the whole campus. Through this reflection and with the input of campus administrators, I realized that our on-level students are struggling throughout the whole school and not just in my class. The gap between on-level students and honors students as widened. Therefore, my Action Research Project focuses on bridging that gap through targeted intervention, so that our struggling on-level students can succeed. This program has wide-ranging impact because now I will continuously reflect on not just my students but the issues facing the school and community at large- this I believe makes me a better teacher-leader.
