The Department of Zoology was established in 1984, coinciding with the inception of the college. Since its establishment, the department has played a significant role in the academic and research development of the institution. Dr. R. T. Laul served as the Founder Head of the Department, and the department subsequently flourished under the leadership of eminent academicians and researchers, including Dr. B. B. Sharma, Dr. B. P. Hardikar, and Dr. N. S. Kulkarni. The department is currently headed by Dr. V. R. Ragade.
Over the years, the Department of Zoology has established a strong foundation in teaching, research, and student development. The department is equipped with a spacious M.Sc. laboratory and a well-equipped Ph.D. research laboratory recognized by the University of Mumbai. More than 30 research scholars have successfully completed their Ph.D. under the guidance of the department's faculty members, reflecting its strong research culture and academic mentorship.
The faculty members of the department have undertaken research projects supported by reputed organizations and institutions, including UGC, DBT, the University of Mumbai, Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), and the Tata Group, among others. Their research contributions are reflected in numerous research publications and patents, further strengthening the department's academic and scientific profile.
The department has also expanded its academic offerings beyond the conventional curriculum. It has received a special grant from Sindhu Swadhyay Sanstha for conducting an M.Sc. course in Oceanography and Fisheries. In addition, the department conducts a Skill Development Course in Commercial Fish Culture and Entrepreneurship, providing students with practical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills relevant to emerging opportunities in fisheries and allied sectors.
Experiential learning is an integral part of the department's academic activities. An annual educational excursion to National Parks and other important natural habitats in India is organized for T.Y.B.Sc. and M.Sc. students, providing them with opportunities to observe biodiversity, understand ecosystems, and connect classroom learning with field-based experiences.
