Activist pieces

I wrote a story on the difficulties I have faced due to being a trans woman in mathematics for Her Maths Story. It can be found here.

Organization

I am an organizer of the workshop QuMA: Queer and Trans in Mathematical Analysis together with Jennifer Duncan (she/her), Silvia Ghinassi (she/her), and Emily Quesada-Herrera (she/her/ella).

Our goal of this workshop was to organize an academic gathering with an inclusive and intersectional flavor.

There are small things that can be done in the organization of any event that will make it feel more welcoming  such as: listing the pronouns of the speakers, having accessible gender neutral bathrooms, asking people to wear masks in crowded rooms, making sure the event takes place in a location that is safe to travel to for minorities, etc. Nonetheless, I haven't typically seen these kinds of things being done at many of the conferences I have attended. As a matter of fact, over the past years I have felt very alienated from them as a (trans) woman. Fortunately there has been a bit of momentum in organizing queer and trans inclusive events in different fields in mathematics. We wanted to be part of this change in our own environment as well. After all, sometimes when you want something done right, you have to lead the way yourself.
