Aljezur, Portugal continued...
We've made many trips to the beach! It's actually crazy how we are able to do this in December! The sun and activities are making such a difference to the winter season and being off grid there's no mention or thoughts of Christmas!
Elli (Our workaway host) has been taking us to all the nice spots around Aljezur but to get back we have been hitch hiking, which is common in Aljezur! You end up meeting some pretty cool humans, get a inside to their life and then you say thank you and goodbye. It's also good for rejection therapy lol
We've stayed in Aljezur now for 3 weeks, mostly doing work in the garden of this retreat space. The work has been a lot more physical than some of the other Workaways we have done so far. We've been chopping down some pine trees and lower branches to help manage the spread of wild fires and then burning all the tree cuttings, there have been many huge fires these weeks 🔥
Also been doing hours and hours of brush cutting 😮💨
We have enjoyed our time here, it has offered us a bit of a retreat ourselves to settle in and relax into the flow of work and peace, whilst also being a great place to sort some admin for me 🥴
Anyway, tchau for now Portugal, we're off to Morocco cos Zoe's running out of days in Europe (and for the cultural experience of course!)
Morocco
Marrakesh
We are in Marrakesh now for 4 nights and we will be embracing tourism during our 10 days in Morocco.
We are staying in a lovely riad which is a traditional Moroccan house built around a courtyard. There's so much colour in Morocco which is nice to see.
Today was our first excursion. We went to the Atlas mountains for a hike followed by a lovely meal by a river!
In Marrakesh were a few merchants who sold prickly pears with a wooden toothpick.
I used to really like prickly pear chocolate when I was a little boy so I really wanted to try this one.
The flavour was nice, sweet, a bit like a strawberry. It has loads of black seeds though, like a watermelon, which are a bit off-putting. Overall, it was quite tasty but nothing super-duper 🌵🍐
We had a short stay in this hectic city, the best part about Riad's are the roof top terraces where you could escape the business of the Medina, bathe in the sun and watch the beautiful sunsets. We met some great people and had some of the best laughs of our travels so far! See you when were back in the UK Luke!
3-day excursion, Marrakesh to Fes
The first stop of our tour was Aït Benhaddou near Ouarzazate. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site from the 11th century (though the buildings now aren't older than the 17th century) and has featured in many films like Lawrence of Arabia and The Mummy.
Today we drove to the Sahara Desert, to the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, close to the boarder of Algeria.
We took a short camel ride into the dunes where we then went sandboarding. Out of everyone there, we were the best at sending it 🤟
My camel was a young boy camel who was always up to mischief. He kept trying to play with Zoe's camel and would nip at Zoe's leg, lol what a jokester!
Now for a night in a tent in the desert camp!
Fes
Well... We'd heard good things about Fes, that it is less touristy and more authentic than Marrakesh. We got this vibe but when walking through the souks in Fes, every 10 seconds some guy would try to scam us, tell us the wrong directions in the hope we would be tricked into following them, pretending not to understand us.
I'm sure if we'd stayed in Fes longer we may have found its charm... but this was quite frustrating 😖
Chefchaouen
This was a lovely place to end our time in Morocco. We took our time making our way around the medina, and the Blue City definitely lives up to its name. We ate some delicious food, went on a walk that gave us a great view of the city, and just took the time to relax.
Driving home for Christmas, yeah!
Now in Germany for Christmas and new year, the rest will be in 2026 😵💫
