Zoar United Methodist Church was originally called Persimmon Creek Methodist. It is claimed to be the oldest place of worship in the county of Saluda. Before the American Revolution, a log church was built where the present church now stands. At one time the church was moved across the road from the current building.
Church records as far back as 1820 indicate that the Rev. Robert L. Edwards served Zoar during that year. Since that time over one hundred ministers have served at various times. In 1832, William Griffith, a local community member, sold an acre of land for $1.00 to the trustees of Persimmon Creek Methodist Episcopal Church. Since that time, Zoar has moved across the street and built a fellowship hall to hold Bible studies, family reunions, and community events.
Zoar UMC has given 4 ministers to the South Carolina United Methodist Conference: William P. Meadows, William B. Bouknight, John Gerald Hipp, and Wayne Horne.
Throughout it's history, Zoar has demonstrated a loving concern for people--both inside and outside the fellowship of the church. We hope you will want to be part of our legacy!
