Zion Baptist Church started the Box Lunch and a Book program in 2015 and has expanded to include sites at Saints Memorial Church in Bryn Mawr and Memorial Church of God and Christ in Haverford.
Box Lunch and a Book distributes nutritious meals and books to K-12 students for free while providing them a place to read during summer break when they might not have the access to the school lunch program . The program offers free literacy, special events, great lunches, workshops – arts and crafts, science, languages and more! On occasion, volunteers will take the children on field trips to places like the Franklin Institute or a local aquarium. The program hands out an average of 2,500 meals each summer.
S.A.G.E.S., an educational arm of Zion functions as a catalyst to promote intergenerational services to the community that includes, but is not limited to housing development, economic development, and a broad range of educational programs, which strengthen the community.
