Digital devices require certain raw materials and special metals that are extracted from the earth which can lead to deforestation, soil degradation and water pollution.
Manufacturing processes require significant amounts of energy and resources, often relying on fossil fuels.
ENERGY CONSUMPTION:
Data centers required for internet services consume a lot of energy for powering servers and cooling systems.
Mining, refining, assembling, and transporting devices require large amounts of energy, contributing to green house gas emission.
Technological advancement is reshaping our way of life, influencing social, economic, and environmental aspects. One major issue that demands our attention is e-waste, which is increasing due to rapid technological progress and growing consumerism.
A key solution to reduce the impact of e-waste on the environment is adopting a circular economy. By reusing, refurbishing, and recovering materials, we can prevent valuable components from ending up in landfills. When e-waste isn't managed properly, it pollutes the environment, contaminates soil and water, and harms ecosystems as well as human health. Cleaning up this damage is costly, but keeping materials in use for longer reduces the need for mining and extracting new resources in the first place.
Refurbishing and donating older devices can also help low-income families gain access to technology. Additionally, proper e-waste recovery creates jobs in tech repair, refurbishment, and materials recovery. Building a strong circular tech economy in Canada can support local employment while bridging digital access gaps.
