How to reduce your garbage production
Use a reusable bottle/cup for beverages on-the-go;
Use reusable grocery bags, and not just for groceries;
Shop local farmers markets and buy in bulk to reduce packaging;
Avoid single use items/foods.
Alternative products
Best alternatives to substitute plastic containers: stainless steel, silicone and bamboo;
Solid shampoo bars, reusable sanitary pads, and reusable coffee cups are all products which reduce the amount of plastic use and production.
Garbage separation and preparation
There should be three different bins at your house: a organic, a recyclable and one for the rejects (materials that can not be reused);
Wash and let dry the products you are going to throw on the recyclable bin, in order to prepare them for reutilization.
