For those who don't know what WhatsApp is, it's a relatively new internet-based service that's widely used around the world, but has not caught on to the same degree in the US and Canada. It is very popular in Costa Rica, and some tourist companies rely on it as an alternative to mobile numbers.

Here's why - if you have an internet connection through wifi or your phone carrier, you can use WhatsApp to voice call, text, or video call another Whatsapp user anywhere in the world for free!  Click here to download and install it on your device. Note that it's a good practice to use your mobile number for your WhatsApp number as well.

Here's another hint to save you phone carrier costs. If your phone supports it (check before you buy), you can also purchase an esim from a company like Airalo. If your phone doesn't support esims, it may have room for two sim cards, so you can buy a local sim card to handle your local calling. Either approach will save you a lot of money, versus paying for long distance through your carrier back home.
